      One Battle After Another

I can’t explain why but this was also anti-abortion propoganda.

Ultimately, this movie was really fun to watch, especially the sound design and the soundtrack. I was absolutely blasted in the very back row of the Regal and the vibe was amazing.

However, it feels crazy that a month ago Assata Shakur dies and then this comes out. So interesting the biraciality of it all. The French 75 seem to be some kind of anarchist group with catchy and corny dialogue (whatever the hell Teyana Taylor was spouting at the beginning like “free borders, free bodies” blah). The two narrative anchors for the main characters (both on screen (Willa) and off (Perfidia)) are two white boys with very specific and opposing swag.

Ghetto Pat is ultimately useless and clueless and we’re told to think of him as a hero (and is even called one by the one other black guy in this) and we’re supposed to believe it… why? Why did the make fun of the “liberal” who was referring to native lands by their official names and being rightly confidential and secure about sensitive information? There were many funny scenes in this movie but this scene with the phone call (among others) were so like. Disney/Marvel making a “comedic political” statement kind of stale lukewarm hot dog water. Random identity politics with no kind of material analysis vibe.

But I have to say Sean Penn’s performance was awesomeness. It honestly flew by. Maybe I need to watch The Battle of Algiers myself after this.
